SMILE DESIGN
Cosmetic Dentistry and smile design are special practices that requires expertise and experience. In this practice, many branches work in collaboration and plan the most suitable treatment in line with the expectations of patients. At Biruni University Dental Hospital, smile design practices are planned in coordination with other departments in line with the expectations of patients, and the healthiest, most permanent and cosmetically pleasing solutions are offered to patients.
WHAT IS SMILE DESIGN?
Smile design, which is one of the most preferred practices in the field of cosmetic dentistry, is a treatment procedure that aims to give the teeth and gingival tissue that plays a role in the smile of the patient to the most natural and cosmetically pleasing appearance possible, taking into account the person's lip, face type, mimics and needs. A cosmetically pleasing appearance is aimed to be given to the teeth tissues with “White Aesthetic", and to the gums with "Pink Aesthetic". Smile design is known as "Hollywood Smile" across the world.
WHAT TREATMENTS/PROCEDURES DOES SMILE DESIGN ENTAIL?
Smile design is usually carried out with a multidisciplinary approach by planning orthodontic, surgical, prosthetic and gingival practices stand-alone or in combination.
WHAT IS DIGITAL SMILE DESIGN?
It is the creation of a personalized, cosmetically pleasing smile design with designs made in a digital environment through the use of digital technologies by dentists.
HOW IS DIGITAL SMILE DESIGN CARRIED OUT?
*At the first appointment, after detailed oral examination and radiographic examinations, conditions related to the teeth and surrounding tissues are determined. The patient is talked to regarding their cosmetic expectations.
*Then, digital measurements of the patient's teeth are taken with intraoral scanners.
*In order to determine the patient's facial profile and dimensions, both intraoral and extraoral photographs are taken at suitable angles. Thanks to these photographs, a suitable dental design is determined according to the anatomical features and facial dimensions of the patient.
*Case examples are shown to the patient in the form of before/after photos of previously performed procedures.
*A smile design suitable for the patient is created in the digital environment. Then, the design made on the models obtained with the measurements taken from the patient is transferred and a temporary mold is obtained from the model.
*In the second appointment, with a practice called mockup, the final state of the design is placed in the patient's mouth with the temporary mold, without inflicting any damage to the teeth. This way, the patient can see the final state of the design without any procedure.
*Necessary changes are made on the temporary mold in line with the patient's wishes. After the treatment plan is clarified, the planned procedures are carried out in order.
*After the intraoral preparations are completed, the cosmetic procedure is started in accordance with the shapes, colors and sizes planned via digital smile design.
HOW MANY SESSIONS DOES DIGITAL SMILE DESIGN TAKE?
After the initial examination, it can take 3 to 5 days to design and prepare temporary molds. The time it takes for the permanent design varies according to the rest of the planned treatments.
IS DIGITAL SMILE DESIGN SUITABLE FOR EVERYONE?
Digital smile design is suitable for anyone who is not satisfied with their smile and teeth. However, if one or more of the teeth is too far ahead of the required position or if the crowding is too much, mockup will not be enough without changing the position of said tooth to reflect the final state of the design. In such cases, it is healthier to go through with digital smile design after the problems are solved.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF DIGITAL SMILE DESIGN?
*The most important advantage is that the patient will be able to see what kind of smile they will have before the treatment.
*It is possible to make the design according to the wishes of the person. This way, patient satisfaction is high and the patient can have the smile that they want, approving it completely.
*To what extent the patient's cosmetic expectations and anatomy overlap is observed. In addition, whether this smile changes the patient's speech and the chewing function of their teeth can also be observed.
WILL I HAVE THE SAME SMILE SHOWN IN THE DIGITAL SMILE DESIGN ONCE THE TREATMENT IS OVER?
Since the material used during the mockup is different from the permanent prosthesis material, the exact same appearance is not obtained. For the final design, more cosmetically pleasing and durable materials are used. The sizes and shapes of the teeth are as determined in the design at the end of the treatment.
